A stroke, sometimes referred to as a cerebrovascular accident (CVA), is a serious medical condition that happens when the brain's blood supply is compromised. This disruption can be caused by a blockage in the blood vessels supplying oxygenated blood to the brain (ischemic stroke) or by bleeding in the brain (haemorrhagic stroke). It is a serious situation that could endanger your life and demands quick medical intervention. A stroke can result in long-term disability if not treated promptly.

Coiling is a minimally invasive intervention that involves the use of a catheter. The procedure can be performed for treating certain types of strokes, especially those linked to aneurysms. During the neuro-interventional procedure, doctors introduce a catheter into one of the major arteries via the groin or by making a tiny incision. The catheter is then navigated through the blood vessels and directed towards the aneurysm using detailed imaging guidance. The coils, which are present inside the catheter, are then carefully implanted inside the aneurysm to promote clotting that helps to seal the aneurysm from receiving any blood.

A - Preventing strokes involves adapting to a healthy lifestyle and managing the risk factors which includes maintaining a healthy blood pressure, quitting smoking, managing diabetes, keeping cholesterol levels in check, maintaining a healthy weight, engaging in regular physical activity, limiting alcohol consumption, and eating a balanced diet. Regular check-ups with a healthcare professional can also help identify and manage any potential risk factors.
A - The prognosis for stroke survivors can vary depending on the severity of the stroke and the extent of the damage to the brain. Some individuals may experience complete recovery, while others may have long-term disabilities. Rehabilitation and therapy can significantly improve the prognosis and help individuals regain lost functions. It is important for stroke survivors to receive ongoing medical care and support to manage their condition effectively.
A - Yes, strokes can be fatal. In fact, stroke is one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide. Prompt medical attention is crucial to minimize the damage caused by a stroke and increase the chances of survival. It is important to recognize the signs and symptoms of a stroke and seek immediate medical help if any of these symptoms occur.
A - The first thing to do is call the emergency services to assist you. Meanwhile, calm the patient and keep talking so he/she doesn’t fall asleep or get unconscious. Ask the person to lie down with the head elevated, this will promote the blood flow to the brain. If the patient gets unconscious, try to give CPR until help arrives.
A - CPR is basically a process of repeated steady chest compressions but is very important to give it in an appropriate manner else can lead to complications. The emergency services will guide you step by step on how to give CPR to the patient in case of emergency depending on the patient’s condition.
A - You cannot predict with certainty if you will experience another stroke. However, after having one stroke, your risk of having another one increases. The best way to decrease your chances of having more strokes is to manage your risk factors and consult with your doctor regularly.
