Spine surgery is a medical procedure that aims to treat various spinal conditions and alleviate associated symptoms. It involves the surgical intervention of the spine to correct deformities, relieve pressure on nerves, stabilize the spine, or remove tumours. Spine surgery is typically performed by a specialized orthopaedic surgeon or neurosurgeon who has expertise in treating spinal disorders.

More Information

There are several types of spine surgery, each tailored to address specific spinal conditions. Some common types include:

  • Discectomy: This procedure removes part of a herniated disc that has pushed against and irritated a nerve root at the point where it exits from under the vertebrae through small openings called foramen (foramina).
  • Spinal Fusion: Spinal fusion is a surgical technique that aims to stabilize the spine by joining two or more vertebrae together. This procedure is commonly used to treat conditions like degenerative disc disease, spinal fractures, or spinal deformities like scoliosis.
  • Disc Replacement: In disc replacement surgery, a damaged or diseased disc is removed and replaced with an artificial disc. This procedure aims to maintain spinal motion while reducing pain and improving function.
  • Facet joint fusion: In this procedure, two vertebrae are fused together in order to stabilize the spine and eliminate motion at that point in the spine.
  • Laminotomy and Laminectomy: A laminotomy involves removing part of the thick bony ridge (lamina) that covers your spinal canal (spinal cord) to allow more room for the nerves exiting your spinal canal. A laminectomy removes all or part of this bony ridge. Both procedures are often done at the same time and are commonly combined with discectomy to treat pinched nerves in the spinal canal.

Spine surgery is considered when conservative treatment options, such as medication, physical therapy, or injections, fail to provide adequate relief. The decision to undergo spine surgery is based on several factors, including the severity of symptoms, the underlying spinal condition, and the overall health of the patient. Some common indications for spine surgery include:

  • Chronic back or neck pain that significantly affects daily activities.
  • Nerve compression that causes weakness, numbness, or tingling in the extremities.
  • Progressive spinal deformities, such as scoliosis or kyphosis
  • Spinal instability or fractures
  • Tumours or infections affecting the spine.

Spine surgery can offer numerous benefits for individuals suffering from debilitating spinal conditions. Some key benefits include:

  • Pain Relief: Spine surgery aims to alleviate chronic pain caused by spinal conditions, allowing individuals to resume their daily activities with reduced discomfort.
  • Improved Mobility: By addressing the underlying cause of mobility limitations, spine surgery can help restore or enhance mobility, enabling individuals to enjoy a more active lifestyle.
  • Enhanced Quality of Life: Successful spine surgery can significantly improve an individual's overall quality of life by alleviating pain, improving function, and restoring independence.
  • Preventing Further Damage: In some cases, spine surgery can prevent the progression of spinal conditions, reducing the risk of complications and long-term disability.
  • Faster Recovery: With advancements in surgical techniques and technologies, many spine surgeries now offer quicker
