Nephrectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the surgical removal of a part of the kidney or all of it, to treat patients suffering from an end-stage renal disease. In the majority of cases, it is recommended for patients with renal tumours or cancer, where it aims at removing the tumour along with the diseased part of the kidney.

More Information

There are several different ways of performing the surgery, based on which the procedure is broadly classified into the following types:

  • Radical nephrectomy, which refers to the removal of the entire kidney
  • Partial nephrectomy or nephron-sparing nephrectomy, which refers to the removal of a part of the kidney
  • Laparoscopic nephrectomy, which is a minimally invasive approach that involves the use of a laparoscope for detailed imaging guidance.
  • Robot-assisted nephrectomy, which is a highly advanced intervention that involves the use of robotic arms and precise imaging guidance.

Nephrectomy may be recommended for renal damage caused by any of the following conditions:

  • Renal cell carcinoma
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Pyelonephritis or kidney infection
  • Severe renal trauma
  • Congenital defects

Nephrectomy may also be performed as a part of living kidney donation.

Procedure:

On the day of the Procedure

  • Doctors will check your vitals on a regular basis to ensure there is no complication.

  • Post-operative care focuses on timely assessment of the patient’s vitals, tracking prognosis, wound care and briefing patients about medication & post-discharge care at home.
  • Doctors will give you a set of guidelines related to your diet and daily activities.

Care at home

  • It is important to take care of the surgical site by keeping it clean and dry
