Heart valve replacement is a surgical intervention reserved for patients with life-threatening valve conditions that cannot be treated by medication alone. It is a crucial, often life-saving procedure that can help to alleviate the risks of serious complications. During the procedure, doctors remove the diseased or dysfunctional valve of the patient and replace it with a prosthetic valve. This can be done via the conventional method or following a minimally invasive technique.
LVD or Left ventricular assist device is an option for those patients whose left ventricle has been damaged beyond repair. The mechanical pump is implanted surgically to support the heart in pumping blood throughout the body. It is a battery-powered device that may serve as a bridge to heart transplant for patients waiting for a donor heart or even as a destination therapy for those who are not fit for the transplant procedure.

Procedure

On the day of the procedure

Soon after you check-in, a nurse will be assigned to guide you
You will be taken for a pre-operative examination, which includes assessment of the patient’s vitals.
Your medical history will be thoroughly evaluated
You will be required to fast, starting a couple of hours prior to the surgery.
An IV line will be started. This makes it possible for the doctors to administer medication and nutritional fluids, while the surgery is being performed.

Care in the hospital

After the procedure, you will be shifted to the Intensive Care Unit and kept under observation. Your vitals will be checked from time to time to ensure there is no complication.
You will be required to stay in the ICU for 3 to 4 days. Depending on your prognosis you will be shifted to your room and then discharged within a week to 10 days
Post-operative care focuses on timely assessment of the patient’s vitals, tracking prognosis, wound care and briefing patients about medication & post-discharge care at home.
Doctors will give you a set of guidelines related to your diet and daily activities.

Care at home

Make sure that you keep the surgical site clean and dry until it heals. This is important to alleviate the risks of wound infection.
Pain and discomfort can be managed with the help of medication prescribed by your doctor.
You need to religiously follow the guidelines related to your medication and diet.
Refrain from indulging in rigorous physical activities
Avoid smoking, alcohol and caffeine.
