Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that affects around 5 million people every year. At present, there are around 50 million people across the globe living with the condition. A result of abnormal brain activity, Epilepsy is characterized by the sudden onset of seizures, sometimes accompanied by other symptoms like unconsciousness and altered behaviour. With proper care and treatment, about 70 per cent of patients can lead a seizure-free life.

More Information

Epilepsy can be classified into two categories based on the type of seizure. These are:

  • Focal seizures - Also referred to as partial seizures, these affect a particular part of the brain, which means that the area of their origin is localized. These generally involve the temporal lobes.
  • Generalized seizures - In this case, the area of origin is not localized and it can involve both sides of the brain, which gives rise to widespread symptoms.

Various symptoms that may be experienced by an epileptic person include:

  • Confusion
  • Staring spells
  • Altered sensation
  • Muscle stiffness
  • Uncontrollable movements
  • Cognitive changes
  • Anxiety
  • Unconsciousness

In some cases, the underlying cause of epilepsy is not known. This is commonly referred to as idiopathic epilepsy. In others, it can be a result of any of the following:

  • Inherited genetic defects
  • Injury or trauma to the head
  • Stroke
  • Structural brain defects like AVMs
  • Brain infections like meningitis
  • Developmental disorders like cerebral palsy and autism

Treatment

Medications

Epilepsy is generally managed with the help of AEDs (antiepileptic drugs). The type of medication that may be recommended varies depending on factors like the type of seizures, the age of the patient and several other factors.

Lifestyle changes

An active lifestyle, adequate sleep and dietary modifications may also prove to be helpful for patients with epilepsy. Patients are also recommended to practice effective stress management techniques.

Surgery

Patients who are not responding to any of these can go for advanced treatment options like vagus nerve stimulation and deep brain stimulation.
