Eternal Hospital is one of the top hospitals in the country and a trusted choice for patients when it comes to cardiac care. The hospital is committed to offering innovative and advanced treatments like angioplasty and is backed by the expertise of a dedicated team of doctors who adhere to stringent benchmarks of quality, safety and precision. At Eternal Hospitals, we bring together the most advanced interventions and techniques from across the globe, to give you easy access to world-class facilities and services. The state-of-the-art diagnostic modalities, dedicated operating units and fully equipped ICU, all aim at giving you a hassle-free experience.

A minimally invasive intervention that aims at treating arterial obstruction, angioplasty uses cardiac catheterization technique for restoring normal blood flow through a narrowed or blocked artery. The catheter is a thin, flexible tube that has an inflatable balloon on one of its ends. This is introduced into one of the major blood vessels in the patient’s body using a guidewire, by making a small incision, preferably on the side of the chest or via the groin. With the help of X-ray imaging techniques, doctors carefully move the catheter towards the affected artery. For better imaging, doctors might administer contrast dye into the patient's body. Once the catheter reaches the blocked site, the balloon is inflated to open the collapsed/obstructed arterial walls and normal blood flow is restored. In some cases, doctors might place a small metallic mesh, known as a stent, within the blocked artery, to prevent further blockage.

More Information

Angioplasty is widely recommended for patients with an arterial blockage that disrupts the normal flow of blood, does not respond to medication & lifestyle modifications and increases the risks of life-threatening complications. Major indications include:

  • Coronary artery disease
  • Peripheral artery disease
  • Renal artery stenosis
  • Carotid artery stenosis

Angioplasty is an effective procedure that offers various benefits to the patient. These include:

  • It helps to restore and enhance the flow of blood, thereby negating the risks of serious complications like heart attack and stroke
  • It restores normal blood flow, thereby alleviating the associated symptoms
  • It is a minimally invasive procedure which means less scarring and minimal blood loss.
  • You can expect reduced hospital stay and recovery period.
  • There is minimal to no pain and discomfort.

Procedure

On the day of the procedure

  • Soon after you reach the hospital, a nurse will be assigned and you will be taken for pre-operative assessment.
  • Your vitals will be assessed and some tests might be performed, followed by questions related to your medical history and allergies.
  • You might be required to fast, starting a couple of hours prior to the surgery. Your doctor will brief you about the same.
  • An IV line will be started to administer medication and nutritional fluids, while the surgery is being performed.
  • You will be made to change into a hospital gown and lie down on the operating table, following which the surgical site will be prepared.

Care in the hospital

  • After the procedure, you will be keenly monitored in the observation room. Your vitals will be checked from time to time to ensure there is no complication.
  • After gaining consciousness you will be shifted to your room, from where you will be discharged in a day or two.
  • Post-operative care focuses on timely assessment of the patient’s vitals, tracking prognosis, wound care and briefing patients about medication & post-discharge care at home.
  • You will be given a set of guidelines related to your diet and daily activities.

Care at home

  • Make sure that you keep the surgical site clean and dry until it heals. This may take a few days.
  • If you experience any pain or discomfort, take the medication prescribed by your doctor.
  • You need to religiously follow the guidelines related to your medication and diet.
  • Avoid any strenuous or vigorous physical activity unless recommended by your doctor.
  • Avoid smoking, alcohol and caffeine.

Follow-ups

  • Regular visits and follow-ups help your doctor to track your prognosis more efficiently. Stay in touch with your doctor and keep him in the loop

FAQ'S

Q: Can angioplasty treat complex arterial blockage?

A: Angioplasty can prove to be highly effective in managing certain types of blockages, however, in some cases, the patient might need more advanced interventions like rotational atherectomy, laser atherectomy or even bypass surgery. In most cases, angioplasty and stenting are enough.

Q: Can anyone undergo angioplasty?

A: Not every patient suffering from arterial blockage qualifies for angioplasty. The option is reserved for patients who are not responding to medication, have a stable medical condition and have good overall health. A series of tests may be performed to determine the same.

Q: How long does an angioplasty procedure take?

A: An angioplasty procedure can last for anywhere between 30 minutes to 2 hours.

Q: Do all patients need a stent during angioplasty?

A: Although not all patients undergoing angioplasty need a stent, a majority of them do. The tiny metal mesh helps to lower the risks of blockage in future.

Q: Can a person need more than one angioplasty?

A: Yes, it is possible that a person may need repeat angioplasty. This is done in the cases of restenosis.

Q: Can angioplasty reduce the risks of heart attack?

A: Yes, angioplasty can help to lower the risks of having a heart attack in future.
